Book Review: The Fourth Wing

If you’ve spent any time on BookTok (the book community on TikTok), then you’ve heard of “The Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros. Even if fantasy romance isn’t your thing, you’ve heard about this book. It’s appearing on all end of the year best book lists and is seemingly the next “A Court of Thorns and Roses.” Well, I finally broke down and read it.

Now, being the father of two grown daughters, and one an avid fantasy romance reader, I could only take the “you have to read this book” for so long. Of course, I’m talking about ACOTR, not TFW. My entire family had read ACOTR and I couldn’t hold out any longer. And to my surprise, I did enjoy the book (and subsequent sequels). So I am still dismayed that I have read TFW, and it’s sequel, “The Iron Flame” before my romance-loving daughter.

And let me tell you, I LOVED this book. It had everything a middle-aged Gen Zer could hope for: Dragons. Yes, there is a spicy romance which I enjoyed, but the real draw for me were the dragons. Ever since I’d played the OG Dungeons and Dragons in the late 70’s, I’ve been enamored with dragons, just like millions of others. But Yarros has created a crew of dragons that will leave you wishing you could cross the parapet and see if you would be lucky enough to be selected by one of them.

If you’re looking for a rehash of the plot, characters, etc., this is not that review. Instead, I just wanted to put it out there that, yes, this book is worth the hype, especially if you’re a fantasy fan and don’t mind a few spicy sex scenes. And as of this writing, my daughter still hasn’t read it.
